Wild Duck Creek Yellow Hammer Hill
A Heathcote red from Wild Duck Creek Estate, the family winery David Anderson founded in Heathcote, Victoria in the 1970s, where his son Liam is now lead winemaker.
Shiraz leads, with Malbec and a little Cabernet Sauvignon, hand-picked from five estate vineyards across Heathcote. The name comes from the hillside of the original vineyard, named by Chinese settlers during the region's 1860s gold rush. It is fermented in small open-top fermenters and basket pressed. It then spends 22 months in concrete, a large French oak foudre and seasoned French and American barrels.
Blue and red berries, mulberry and five-spice fruit cake, with a wet-stone, earthy edge. The palate is rich, with herbs, mixed spice, supple tannins and a long finish.
