Montes was founded in 1987 by Aurelio Montes, Douglas Murray, Alfredo Vidaurre and Pedro Grand, and Aurelio is credited with leading Chile's shift to quality wine. This 100% Malbec is from hand-picked fruit grown on the estate's Apalta and El Arcángel de Marchigüe vineyards in the Colchagua Valley.
After fermentation in stainless steel and full malolactic, 40% of the wine spends six months in French oak. Deep ruby, showing blueberry, blackberry and plum with sweet spice, vanilla and nutmeg, medium-bodied with silky tannins and a long finish.
Montes recommends it with steak and chips, spaghetti Bolognese or cheese. Give it half an hour in a decanter and open at 17 to 19°C.
