Lillet has been made in Podensac, on the banks of the Garonne south of Bordeaux, since 1872. The Rouge was created in 1962, based on Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from the surrounding region, blended with fruit liqueurs and macerated citrus peel before being aged in oak casks for a year. Between 1990 and 1993 the recipe was reformulated with higher-quality base wines to produce a more complex flavour, and it has remained largely unchanged since.
