Distillerie Combier has been making liqueurs in Saumur, in the heart of the Loire Valley, since 1834, and the Guignolet d'Anjou is one of their oldest expressions. It's made to a recipe that dates back to the end of the 17th century. Guignolet is a style of cherry liqueur specific to the Anjou region, made from guignes, an ancient variety of sour cherry that has been grown in the Loire for centuries. The cherries are macerated whole with their stones intact, which imparts a delicate almond note alongside the fruit.

The result is rich but balanced, with the natural sweetness of ripe cherry tempered by a subtle tang and almond undercurrent. Serve well chilled as an aperitif, or use it to add depth to a Kir.
