Bodegas Ontanon Reserva, DOCa Rioja, 2015
The big brother to their award-winning Crianza, this wine displays greater complexity, intensity of flavour and a more rounded, longer finish. The tannins are super smooth and supple, as you would expect for a wine of this age, and it's drinking beautifully right now.
Reservas are only produced in years of exceptional quality - and from the most select vineyards. The Tempranillo (95%) is sourced from La Pasada vineyard, and the Graciano (5%) from La Montesa. After fermentation is finished the wines are moved to barrels for 12 months: 60% in American oak and 40% in French oak. The wine is then further aged for 24 months in the bottle.
Bodegas Ontañón is a 5th generation family-owned and run winery. Much of the production in the region is dependent on contracts with grape growers, however, the Pérez Cuevas family prides itself on ownership of its own land and vines as this gives them full control over the grape quality.
Taste guide: delicate floral notes and aromas of bramble with spice give way to ripe, rich plum, blackberry and figgy fruit flavours. On the finish you’ll find lashings of tobacco, cedar, vanilla, dried fruitcake and earthy notes which linger on your palate.
