Bodegas Ontanon Crianza, DOCa Rioja
An award-winning Rioja Crianza made in a very approachable yet classic, easy-drinking style. With supple tannins and good acidity bringing a freshness to the wine, this Rioja Crianza shows a lovely depth of flavour on the palate with ripe fruit.
A blend of 90% Tempranillo and 10% Garnacha this wine spends 12 months in 60% American and 40% French oak barrels before bottling. It is then aged a further 12 months in bottle prior to release.
Bodegas Ontañón is a 5th generation family-owned and run winery. Much of the production in the region is dependent on contracts with grape growers, however, the Pérez Cuevas family prides itself on ownership of its own land and vines as this gives them full control over the grape quality. This wine is produced from 40 year old vines grown in two vineyard sites to the south of the River Ebro in Rioja Baja. The Tempranillo is grown in the La Montesa vineyard, the Garnacha from Siete Caminos.
Taste guide: Aromas of intense black fruits and warming spice are found on the nose. Notes of bramble, cherry and fig with hints of liquorice and coffee on the palate.
