This wine may be classified as a Vin de France, but don’t dismiss it out of hand because it’s made by Alexandre Favier, of Domaine Chante Cigale, one of the hot, new-wave producers in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, so you are getting generations of winemaking expertise in your “Wednesday Wine” bottle!

Made from 80% Grenache Noir and 20% Carignan, this wine combines juicy, ripe red and black fruit flavours with oh, so soft tannins, and zip of acidity to keep it fresh. The Carignan spends a short time aging in 5 year old Burgundy barrels to round out the tannins and give it a lick of spice.

The domaine’s name - Chante Cigale – comes from the famed ‘singing cicadas’ which dominate the soundscape along the Rhône valley. Alex sources the grapes for this wine from land the family owns to the west of Gigondas, which is currently being converted to organic status.

Taste guide: you'll find raspberry, strawberry, black cherry and stewed plum alongside subtle herbal and spice notes
