Few bottles are as recognisable as Aperol, all sunset orange and gentle bitter-orange bite. It sits at the lighter end of the aperitivo family at just 11%, built on a secret infusion of sixteen botanicals that takes in bitter orange, gentian, cinchona bark and rhubarb, most still drawn from Piedmont as they were when the Barbieri brothers first showed it in Padua in 1919.
Most will reach for it in a Spritz, three parts Prosecco to two of Aperol with a splash of soda over plenty of ice, though it rewards a lighter hand across all sorts of low-alcohol serves.
