The family came from a line of wine growers and started out distilling cognac for major houses such as Hennessy. When the cognac market struggled in the 1970s, Gilles Merlet replanted the vineyards with blackcurrant bushes and began making crème de cassis. It sold well, and the distillery has since become known for its macerated fruit liqueurs. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eSœurs Cerises was released in autumn 2015. It is made from several varieties of cherry, mostly Morello.
